Sharon and I are
currently on a 2 week agricultural mission, working with farmers in rural areas
of the DR. It’s been a great experience so far and we have seen some pretty
incredible sights. This week we are in the Eastern part of the DR (near Haiti)
in the town of Constanza. It is high in the mountains and when the clouds roll
in it creates a surreal landscape. Traveling the mountain roads at 50-60 mph –
dodging livestock and motorcycles – has taken a few good years off my life but
so far no fatalities.
The volume of produce grown in Constanza is unbelievable. We’ve seen acres and acres
(or should I say Hectares) of garlic, potatoes, onions, broccoli, cabbage,
cauliflower, carrots and much more. Also – greenhouse grown tomatoes, bell
peppers and cucumbers. Most of this
produce goes to the East coast of the US and of course some stays in the DR for
local consumption. It is the perfect place to grow vegetables and they do a
great job – with just a few problems. That’s why we are here…
Next week we’re off to another area of the DR to work with
women farmers growing greenhouse vegetables. More later…
